CNC-machining is more costly because the designs of the parts themselves are more difficult to produce. After all, that’s why they need a computer to direct the cuts rather than a less-precise human. In any field, the higher quality and higher precision required, the more expensive it will be.

THE TRUE COST OF CNC MACHINING.

Simply put, the cost of CNC machining is any given hourly rate. The cost of CNC machined parts is the total cost of raw materials, plus the cost of any special fixturing, plus the labour hours taken to machine each part.

It takes many years of experience to be able to accurately quote CNC machined parts. There are a number of factors that need to be considered, each of which has the ability to increase or decrease the cost of machining services.

This easy to read article provides a breakdown of the factors involved and gives an overview of a typical citation process. More importantly, this article explains Kesu Hardware's unique quoting process (and how we could save you money on your parts)!

In general, suppliers do not disclose their hourly rates with customers.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. The slight increase in price that an ISO 9001 accredited company such as Kesu Hardware will charge is a reflection of the additional quality control checks that each machined component must undergo before being shipped out the door.

Kesu Hardware prides itself on its ability to provide accurate quotes while remaining fair and competitive to its customers. Thanks to our efficient machining strategy, a recent benchmarking exercise positioned us cheaper than our ISO 9001 accredited competitors!

WHAT MAJOR FACTORS INFLUENCE PRICES?

The cost of CNC machined parts is really just the sum of the time it takes to make them, multiplied by the hourly rate. A deeper understanding of all the processes that go into manufacturing will lead to more accurate pricing. These processes include programming, setting up machine tools, de-burling and inspection.

Partnering with a company that truly cares about quality and has robust quality assurance processes in place, such as Kesu Hardware, can be the difference between only 1% of your batch being inspected versus 100% of your batch. What a great illustration of what you get for what you pay.

There is no doubt that quality is something to be paid for. If you are willing to place an order with the cheapest vendor you can find, expect the resulting product you receive to be worth the cheaper price tag.

As a customer, it is beneficial to understand what other factors can influence the price you pay, beyond the quality control measures already mentioned. As listed below, many of these factors are within your control:

ISO 9001 accreditation - are your suppliers really committed to their quality promises?

Batch size-Do you want 1-off or 1,000-off?

Outsourced Operations - Do you want the parts supplied anodized, or will you source them yourself?

Material Selection – Aluminium can be machined at a much lower cost than steel.

Geometry - dimension, shape, and part complexity can increase the machining cycle.

Lead time – How urgently do you need the components?

Tolerance-Tighter tolerances add a higher risk and require additional inspection time.

Fixturing - Does your component have a complex profile that requires a bespoke work-holing solution to hold it during machining operations?

Kesu Hardware can save you significant money on your components, thanks to our smart gains in reduced manufacturing time efficiencies.

ADDITIONAL COMPLETION COSTS

Finally, you need to pay to get your hands on the final product so you should budget for this cost.

We often use DHL to transport the products. If you need a fast turn around then you can expect to pay more for shipping. So keep this in mind when scheduling your production.

Bear in mind that the material you use will have an impact on your shipping costs, as these are calculated based on weight. For example, aluminum is a much lighter metal than stainless steel so will be cheaper to ship.
